Busting This Myth About SEO

Breaking down this myth “It’s not important to have a secure (https encrypted) website for SEO purposes.”

Have you noticed that some URLs start with “http://” while others with “https://”? Simply put, the extra “s” means your connection to that website is encrypted so hackers can’t intercept any of your data. The technology that powers that little “s” is called SSL, which stands for Secure Sockets Layer.

Google introduced HTTPS in August of 2014 as a signal in their ranking algorithms. At that time, if your website still
relied on standart HTTP, your rankings could suffer.

In October 2017, Google released a new version of their Chrome browser, version 62. And it warned users that if their page contained HTTP vs HTTPS they would see a “not secure” label when displaying a HTTP site.

For SEO, Google has publicly stated that if two websites which are of equal content, if one has SSL enabled it may receive a slightly rank boost to outweigh the other. And….85% of people stated that they will not continue browsing
if a site is not secure, according to recent online research.

So…..do be sure to get your web designer to upgrade your business website to HTTPS, as soon as possible, if you have not already done that.

Remember SEO is something every website owner should have an inkling about and include key words and phrases is all the content they create.
